Hibiscus Spritzer

May 16, 2015 Leave a Comment

This spritzer is an inspiration from our trip to Mexico earlier this year.  While we were there, we went to a spa that served us hibiscus water when we arrived.  And I have been thinking about it ever since.  Yes, you read that right… I have been thinking about hibiscus water for months.  It was that good.

So of course I had to recreate it, and that I did.  It was delicious.  Then I thought..what would happen if I made it a spritzer and threw some fruit in there for a non-alcoholic sangria?  Well, it was AMAZING.  It is slightly tart with a touch of sweetness and it is very refreshing.  Perfect for a hot spring or summer day.  Memorial Day barbecue anyone?

Ingredients
  1. 16 cups of water
  2. 1 eight ounce cone piloncillo
  3. 1 1/2 cups of hibiscus flowers
  4. 8 cups of seltzer (I used orange seltzer)
  5. 2 oranges, 2 lemons and 2 limes (or an assortment of your personal preferences)
  6. ice cubes
To make the hibiscus water
  1. 1. Bring 16 cups of water to boil in a large pot. Add piloncillo and hibiscus.
  2. 2. Stir to dissolve piloncillo. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
  3. 3. Strain liquid into a pitcher.
  4. 4. Chill until cold. If you would like, add the sliced oranges, lemons and limes now so the flavors have time to really "marinate" together.
  5. The hibiscus water can be made the night before, however I would wait to add the fruit until a few hours before.
To make the spritzer
  1. 1. When ready to serve take the chilled hibiscus water and add 1/2 cup of seltzer for every cup of hibiscus water in the pitcher.
  2. 3. If you did not already add the fruit, then add sliced oranges, lemons and limes now.
  3. 4. Add ice and you are ready to serve!
Notes
  1. *There are approximately 2+ pitchers worth of spritzer. You can always half the recipe to make a smaller batch.
  2. *The hibiscus water itself is also very tasty, although you may want to dilute it down with a little water and ice if you are not going to make the spritzer.
